AAOS News
| Study looks at post-THA risk factors for VTE
A Danish study published in the September 15
issue of the Journal of
Bone & Joint Surgery-American examines risk factors for venous
thromboembolism (VTE) after total hip arthroplasty (THA). The authors reviewed
all cases of patients who underwent primary THA and received pharmacological
thromboprophylaxis in Denmark from 1995 to 2006 (67,469 procedures). Even
though all patients received thromboprpylaxis, the overall rate of
hospitalization for VTE within 90 days following a primary THA was 1.02 percent
(686 hospitalizations); hospitalization occurred at a median of 22 days.
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis had a reduced relative risk for VTE compared
with patients with primary osteoarthritis (adjusted relative risk [aRR]=0.47;
95 percent confidence interval [CI], 0.25 to 0.90). Patients with a high score
on the Charlson comorbidity index were at increased risk compared with patients
with a low score (aRR=1.45; 95 percent CI, 1.02 to 2.05). Patients with a
history of cardiovascular disease or prior VTE had an increased risk for VTE
compared with patients without those histories (cardiovascular history
aRR=1.40; 95 percent CI, 1.15 to 1.70; prior VTE history aRR=8.09; 95 percent
CI, 6.07 to 10.77) .
