WSOA WINS STATE SOCIETY OF THE YEAR!
The Washington State Orthopaedic Association received the 2009 award as the state association of the year from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.  The award is based on the coordination of the Washington State's orthopaedic community in furthering the profession of orthopaedic surgery and enhancing patient care.  The award was accepted at the National Orthopaedic Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. April 29 by the current president, Dr. John Adkison from Yakima, and Dr. Pat Halpin from Olympia, second vice president of Washington State Orthopaedic Association.  They also represent the State on the Orthopaedic Academy's Board of Councilors.  The President of the State Association during 2009 was Dr. Wally Krengel, a member of the University of Washington faculty working at Children's Orthopedic Hospital.  One of the primary factors in the WSOA winning this award was the breadth of leadership.  Other board members who were intimately involved include:

Lyle Sorensen, MD
Chris Kontogianis, MD
Robert Winquist, MD
Brian Wicks, MD
Tom Degan, MD
Robert Yancey, MD
Ash Patel, MD
Doug Musgrave, MD
Michael Thorpe, MD

The WSOA wishes to thank the members of the University of Washington faculty who have supported the organization.   The WSOA has continued a strong relationship with the University including annual financial support of the residency graduation ceremony.  We have sponsored an annual competition with financial awards for resident papers.  We sponsor an annual meeting for members and open it without charge to residents.  We have enjoyed presentations at our annual meeting each year by members of the U. of W. faculty and residents.

Congratulations to the orthopaedic program at the University of Washington!  You have played a major role in the success of the Washington State Orthopaedic Association.
EMRs can create communication dilemmas
Electronic medical records (EMRs) help with patient communication by giving physicians immediate access to patient information, but they can also distract clinicians during office visits and may be overused at the expense of real-time communication with patients and other physicians, according to a study from the Center for Studying Health System Change. The study of 52 physicians and other staff confirmed that EMRs enriched patient education during visits but also found that the checkbox format of the EMR could discourage open-ended questions. The availability of much more information prior to the patient visit may also discourage engagement with the patient, the authors said.
